Azure Infrastructure Engineer

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Azure Infrastructure Engineer to lead day-to-day operations of a small infrastructure team and ensure the availability, security, and performance of our computing and communications environment. Reporting to the Infrastructure and Cyber Security Manager, the person in this role will combine technical leadership, hands-on Azure and on-premises skills, and close collaboration with Cyber Security and other departments to drive reliable, secure infrastructure services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a small team of Infrastructure Support Engineers, organise team activities, and manage vendor relationships for support contracts and procurement.
  • Administer Azure Cloud services (PaaS, IaaS, SaaS), including platforms such as Dynamics 365 and Azure DevOps, and act as the primary escalation point for Azure-related issues.
  • Manage Active Directory and Azure Entra ID, and assist with maintenance of hardware, servers and on-premises components.
  • Design, implement and maintain infrastructure solutions applying industry best practice, and lead infrastructure improvement and upgrade projects.
  • Monitor server and network health, troubleshoot capacity or performance issues, and ensure critical services achieve maximum uptime.
  • Manage Mobile Device Management for examiner iPads via Intune, and support business application infrastructure needs.
  • Collaborate with the Cyber Security team to enforce security controls across servers, networks and Azure estate, including patching, authentication, SSL certificate management and firewall rule configuration (Meraki).
  • Manage backups, define and implement data replication strategies across Azure, and contribute to Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity planning and testing.
  • Support audit and compliance activities (software licensing, reporting) and contribute to the Information Security Policy Suite.
  • Maintain clear system documentation and produce regular infrastructure and security reports, including quarterly Infrastructure reports.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience designing, implementing and maintaining infrastructure and network solutions, with strong Azure administration skills across PaaS, IaaS and SaaS platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Active Directory and Azure Entra ID administration.
  • Practical knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, business continuity planning and testing in cloud and hybrid environments.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring and firewall management (Meraki preferred), SSL certificate management and anti-malware controls consistent with standards such as PCI DSS and Cyber Essentials Plus.
  • Experience managing vendor contracts and support relationships, and delivering value from external suppliers.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for server and network incidents, with experience monitoring capacity and ensuring service availability.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, with experience producing documentation and regular operational reports.
  • Demonstrable experience working collaboratively with security, application and business teams to meet organisational needs.
  • Relevant professional certifications or equivalent practical experience in cloud, networking or infrastructure administration are desirable.
