Senior Azure Data Engineer

Job Overview

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join a client operating in the health and fitness sector. The person in this role will design and implement scalable data pipelines and lakehouse architectures on Databricks, lead a platform migration from Azure Synapse to Databricks, and deliver robust solutions that support analytics, business intelligence and self-service reporting across the organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and maintain scalable data pipelines and lakehouse architectures using Databricks technologies, including Delta Lake and Spark.
  • Plan and execute the migration of analytic workloads from Azure Synapse to Databricks, ensuring measurable improvements in performance and reliability.
  • Develop and optimise a Databricks-based data warehouse to support analytics and BI workloads.
  • Design and maintain semantic models and data structures that enable enterprise reporting and self-service analytics.
  • Collaborate with analytics, product and business teams to deliver high-quality Power BI datasets and dashboards that meet stakeholder requirements.
  • Author, optimise and tune complex SQL queries for large-scale analytical workloads to ensure efficient performance.
  • Implement and monitor data quality, reliability and governance practices across the analytics platform.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, establish data engineering best practices and maintain standards for the analytics environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in data engineering or analytics engineering roles.
  • Proven hands-on experience with Databricks, including Spark and SQL development at scale.
  • Advanced SQL skills with demonstrable experience in query performance tuning and optimisation.
  • Experience executing migrations of data platforms, preferably from Azure Synapse to Databricks.
  • Practical experience with Power BI, including dataset modelling and integration with semantic models.
  • Strong understanding of Kimball data warehousing principles, star schema design and analytics best practices.
  • Experience working with cloud-based data platforms and services.
  • English language proficiency at Upper-Intermediate level or higher.
